Shrove Tuesday is the day preceding Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. What that means for many of us is the eating of pancakes.

In England, as part of community celebration, many towns held traditional Shrove Tuesday football (‘Mob football’) games, dating as far back as the 12th century. The practice mostly died out in the 19th century, after the passing of the Highway Act 1835, which banned playing football on public highways. A number of towns have maintained the tradition, including Alnwick in Northumberland, Ashbourne in Derbyshire (called the Royal Shrovetide Football Match), Atherstone (called the Ball Game) in Warwickshire, Sedgefield (called the Ball Game) in County Durham, and St Columb Major (called Hurling the Silver Ball) in Cornwall.

Shrove Tuesday was once known as a ‘half-holiday’ in England. It started at 11:00am with the signalling of a church bell. On Pancake Day, pancake races are held in villages and towns across the United Kingdom. The tradition is said to have originated when a housewife from Olney was so busy making pancakes that she forgot the time until she heard the church bells ringing for the service. She raced out of the house to church while still carrying her frying pan and pancake – wiki

Here is the recipe for classic pancakes. Don’t forget the sugar and lemon.

200g plain flour
3 eggs, lightly beaten
About 500ml milk
A knob of butter or a little vegetable oil, for frying
Lemons and caster sugar, for serving

The batter will thicken as it rests, so if necessary gently stir in more milk until it’s the consistency of single cream. Makes about 20.

Sift the flour into a bowl. Beat in the eggs and enough milk to make a batter that’s the consistency of single cream.

Heat a frying pan until very hot. Add the butter or oil and wipe off any excess with a wad of kitchen paper. Add a ladle of batter, tipping and tilting the pan so it’s evenly coated. The underside is done when you can lift it to see its golden underside. Flip or toss it over and cook the other side for barely a minute. Place on a warmed plate while you repeat with the rest of the batter. Serve with lemons and caster sugar

What is your favourite pancake filling?

It is not too late to make sure you have the perfect day. Event Hire can supply the Champagne glasses.

A recent study states that Champagne does taste better when using a flute.

Champagne does taste different depending on the glass you drink it out of, say scientists – and long, tall flutes are the best way to enjoy fizz.

Bubbly poured into a long narrow flute provides more of a nose-tingle than when served in a wide and shallow ‘coupe’, thanks to high levels of carbon dioxide at the top of the glass.

Scientists used sophisticated gas-analysis technology to test the effect of either pouring champagne into a flute or a coupe.

The reason is that much higher levels of carbon dioxide, released by bubbles in the glass, collect at the top of a flute.

Carbon dioxide irritates sensory nerves in the nose, giving rise to the well known tingling sensation that accompanies drinking champagne.

Dr Gerard Liger-Belair and colleagues, from the University of Reims, wrote: ‘From the consumer point of view, the role of bubbling is indeed essential in champagne, in sparkling wines, and even in any other carbonated beverage.

‘Without bubbles, champagne would be unrecognisable, beers and sodas would be flat.

‘However, the role of effervescence is suspected to go far beyond the solely aesthetical point of view.’

The effect of bubbles is an essential part of the champagne drinkers experience, the French researchers stressed in the online journal Public Library of Science ONE.

From a range of Champagne flutes: Signature,Domino, Cabernet and Epernay – to Martini glasses for Champagne cocktails, Event Hire have the perfect glass for any occasion.

Manufactured in transparent polycarbonate, the Banquo chair will provide a stunning visual impact to your event.

The name Banquo originates from another ghost that appeared in Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Banquo is a character in William Shakespeare’s 1606 play Macbeth. In the play, he is at first an ally to Macbeth (both are captains in the King’s army) and they are together when they meet the Three Witches. After prophesying that Macbeth will become king, the witches tell Banquo that he will not be king himself, but that his descendants will be. Later, Macbeth in his lust for power sees Banquo as a threat and has him murdered; Banquo’s son, Fleance, escapes. Banquo’s ghost returns in a later scene, causing Macbeth to react with alarm during a public feast – Wiki
